Four Photos February 2013

South Carolina, and the California Desert, February 2013. Photos with my new Sony RX-100. They say we can’t get more quality into a web image with more pixels. This camera sports  a 20MP sensor. I’m very pleased with both image quality and color on my new camera. I find a noticeable image improvement over my older “compact point and shoots.” Thanks once again to Richard Wanderman for paving the way.

Monsoon Sunset Glow

Alex says: “This unusual rose-colored lighting lasted about 2 minutes. The block wall background is actually gray; the pool patio, a light tan. The coloration came from the clouds in P1000368.” … Click image for larger file. Photo by Alex Forbes. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX580. Also browse all images in Alex’s galleries. Summer in Phoenix

Two photo vignettes taken during Monsoon season.

Alex says: “Cool Diving Board Cat, Panasonic Lumix July 2012.” We have several generations of stray cats roaming the place. This mother cat commandeered the pool diving board to watch over her personal domain. Shot from indoors. I couldn’t open the slider door or remove the beach towel to capture this moment, as that would have scared her off. Click image for larger file. Photo by Alex Forbes. Phoenix Thundershowers!

It doesn’t happen that often in Phoenix, but when it rains, it pours. On the drive down to Phoenix yesterday, I caught rain sufficient to wash the windshield, and little more. Once safely in the garage at home here, the real event began, as I try to show in these photos. I didn’t know it, but I was getting water spotting on the lens, even under the protection of porch overhangs.

Duck Day Afternoon, II

P1000083.jpg Duck Day Afternoon, II ... Click image for larger file.

“Duck Day Afternoon, II” … Phoenix. Not particularly a prestigious fine art photo, and the image title’s been used before too. What is new is an inch of rain, an all-free pool water fill-up, from yesterday’s storm: freshly downloaded from the Pacific, what they think is the new El Nino, gone as quickly as it arrived.

If you read our recent post in My Notes, this image shows the pool level is normal. The supposed “leak” turned out to be a switch someone accidentally left set in “backwash” mode. Problem easily fixed.  Click image for large file. Browse all images in Alex’s Gallery.

Frost on Glass

Dave writes from Oregon:”Here’s a shot of frost on the glass last week. The truck had been parked outside, and the fractal pattern of the ice crystal formation is very nice. I wonder about the nearly vertical tracks, perhaps those were drip trails before it all froze. I think the oak tree in the background adds a bit of interest as well. I sent the full-res shot this time because it enlarges pretty well.” Sony DSC-W70. Click image for a large 1024×768 desktop file.

Winter Strikes Northern California

IMG_0178.jpg California winter ... Click image for larger file.

Winter has struck Northern California with its full cruelty. This shot was taken a couple of days before Christmas while visiting a friend’s house. Notice one of the trees has even lost its leaves due to the cold. We were unable to wear T-shirts for more than an hour of midafternoon sun. This week we have been terrorized by a drizzle which makes the ground look wet, yet mysteriously does not wash the cars.  Canon EOS 5D … Click image for larger desktop file.
