Cactus, by my friend David Swanson, on Flickr. Sony DSLR-A580, August 10, 2013, vicinity of Sacramento, CA. Swan says, “In my mother’s garden.” I’ve seen cacti like this before, but only once or twice, and in a flower pot, not in a native desert environment. Note the deep “crenelated” channels. I’m guessing they would help this plant re-radiate heat. The formidable spike formations are reminiscent of a Maginot line, or the spiked metal castings police use to blow out tires in vehicular pursuits.
