This photo is reduced slightly, but you can really see why the popular name for this plant is “bottle brush”. The bristles are clumped together in a regular way, like the old fashioned way of making a brush by plugging bristles into a hole in the substrate.
I think the California variety has the red “bottle brush” bristles spaced evenly around the central stem. Neat!
