Changes at PHOTO Notes – NEW

February, 2013: We are no longer adding new content to our JAlbum galleries, or offering “desktop” size photo image downloads, mostly because multi-tasking to prepare a new photo for publication was just becoming too high-maintenance. Instead, we’re featuring a single high quality 500 pixel image, so the viewer does not have to  “click image” to enjoy photography featured from myself and my friends.

Additionally, we are embedding photos from my own and friends’ Flickr pages instead of uploading the same content multiple times to Flickr and Summitlake.com. I like Flickr ®, which was first recommended to me by my friend Richard Wanderman. Flickr provides a number of useful tagging features in addition to the option of viewing any collection as a gallery slide show.

March 3, 2009: We’re moving all the photos from the old Photo Gallery and Friends Gallery HTML pages over to snappy new Gallery display browsers by Jalbum. The old “Photo” page will disappear as soon as we complete the move of all the content. Almost all of the new links have already been added.

Please check out the new browser Galleries for Alex, Dave, Swan, and Friends. Other Gallery links point to original Adobe and perl-cgi browsers: Vietnam, Terry White, Margarido Drive, Kauai. It will take a long time to convert all the image file metadata to feed text to the new browsers, so we just added links to the unconverted older formats for now.

Links to the new content are added on the right sidebar of this page. Links are now subdivided into Links (external), Links – Site, Galleries and HTML Archives. At this writing, you can already access all the content in this WordPress department, plus all the content on the old PHOTO page, be clicking the links on this right sidebar.

If you’ve bookmarked any of the old galleries or pages, the bookmarks may not be good much longer, but the good news is: now you only need one bookmark, to this PHOTO Notes page.

Changes here at PHOTO Notes

Welcome to our new “cms” (content management system). Web software is made by WordPress. Over the next few days we will phase out our older system. As you find the distinctive new WordPress styles on the pages for PHOTO Notes (this page), My Notes, COMMENTARY and/or COMPUTERS: go ahead and re-bookmark them if you like to bookmark. If you don’t bookmark, we’ll be changing the site page links as we go, so it will be seamless for you.

Bookmarks to the old pages will be redirected for a while. Eventually the old directories will disappear. We hope you like the new look!

Note to Our Readers

This is also being posted in My Notes, as a follow-up to earlier entries on this subject there. Earlier this week we had to turn off Comments. We were hit by a baffling graffiti-spam two days in a row, where a person or bot (not sure which) posts links to objectionable sites. They are offensive and unwelcome, easily deleted, but otherwise harmless.

We were not sure at first why we were targeted. We discovered the problem is as old as interactive web pages, and the purpose is to raise the Google ranking of the offensive sites. Click “Continue Reading” to find out more about this bottom-feeder phenomenon.

We apologize to our readers for any concern this may have caused. We’ve since taken reasonable additional steps to prevent posting of a known collection of objectionable links. We’ll gradually open up Comments to recent postings, although (author’s message) not enough of you were using them.

Please note that, at this point, we have not installed a cuss words filter here (we do have one). There are many cuss words that have perfectly inoffensive non-slang meanings. At some point, common sense has to prevail. When it does not, those of us with authorship privileges can always delete inappropriate comments with the click of a button.

In the continuation page of this article, you can read what a notable authority, Jay Allen of MT-Blacklist, has to say about this phenomenon.
